Having minimal connection with the outside world, Sichuan Liangshan, a mountainous region of southern China located in between Yunnan and Guizhou, has a population of five million and owns China's largest population of the minority "Yi". Family Under the Roof tells the story of the boy Yong Wang, a very tough twelve-year-old "young man", whose mother died from an accident and whose family struggles with extreme poverty. The boy reads aloud a letter he wrote to his mama throughout the whole film. "Poverty and a harsh life does not scare me; it helps me mature, and makes me tougher."
